Homework assignment #2

First: starting this week , EVERY WEEK in your sketchbook I want to see ten drawings of hands....at most one or two per page of sketchbook. They must be numbered and dated.

Second: For this week, In your sketch book I want you to take the concept we covered of the bean and apply it to the figures in the pieces.  The main goal is to analyze to form of the figure.

Step 1:Look at these drawings/photos for examples,

Step 2: Read through the pages in the book on gestures

Step 3: Draw 20 bean/gesture figures on sheets in your sketchbook from the pictuires provided at the bottom of this page.

Remember- Stay loose, focus on volumes, don't worry about rendering.
The beans we've been doing in class. Think the upper bean is the torso, bottom bean the hips.
The direction of the beans indicate the shape and direction of the torso.
Look for places where the body "squashes" and stretches. One side will squash the other stretch

note the twist of the hips and the chest away from each other. and how you can start dividing the bean into body forms. The midsection where the abdominals and the laterals and obliques are is an area that twisats like a twoel between two solid objects( The chest and the hips)
The abdominal area twists like a cloth above.

Homework assignment 1

Recreate Two  of the drawings below on a 9 x12 sheet of good heavy weight drawing paper using graphite. ( if the image is different proportions than 9 x 12, feel free to crop the piece to fit keeping in mind the more important elements of the design of the drawing.)
Pay attention to when you are using line as contour, outline,  rendering, perspective or when you are focusing on shape and texture and pattern. Part of the assignment is to try to understand the descisions made by the original artist with regard to line shape, volume and design. Go back to review the drawing elements slideshow if you want to get a reminder. If you do one more loose drawing, switch to a more complete drawing for the second.

Try to keep the first stages as you are planning out your image loose and build to a more complete drawing. Choose an image which more reflects the way you would prefer to work.  In class we will discuss your drawings and how you used the different line elements of drawing.

Due next class!

Slideshow

This is a link to the slideshow for the first class. It will be a guideline to how we move forward in class.

This weeks assignment due 4/15

Hey everyone!

You are to go to this site:

http://www.onairvideo.com/photo-archive.html

and choose  2 figures to draw.

• It should be a full figure with hands and feet in the image.
• Drawn on good quality drawing paper
• the image( not just the paper) should be at least 9x14"
• Use a medium you feel comfortable with
• Pay close attention to hands, feet and the construction of the head( use the sheets I've given you for construction or consult anatomy books)
• remember to start the drawing with a gesture, build up the structure using beans, build the mannequin and finally render the final drawing.
• Give yourself a border to draw within for composition
• The final drawing can be in any medium you choose.
• Put your name on the drawing

I will be collecting the drawings at the next class.
Bring in three different colored pencils and drawing paper( and ink if you like) this week.

Thanks!
